Evaluating Global Issues with Limited AI Use

Purpose

This assignment encourages students to independently explore and evaluate the complex interdependence of global issues using a multidisciplinary approach.

By synthesizing cultural, historical, and contextual insights, students will engage in critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and reflective analysis to develop a deeper understanding of global challenges. This assignment emphasizes the human ability to evaluate diverse perspectives and communicate meaningful responses, fostering skills aligned with Bloom’s higher-order domains of evaluation and synthesis.

  • Synthesize research findings into a coherent analysis and effective response proposals.
  • Communicate insights through a detailed report and creative representation.

Instructions

Written Report and Panel Discussion/Visual Art Exhibition

  1. Virtual Field Study
    • Select a region and global issue of interest (e.g., climate change, economic inequality, conflict).
    • Use digital resources such as satellite imagery, news reports, and videos to gather data on:
      • Context and geographical features
      • People involved and directly affected
      • Characteristics and implications of the global issue
      • Cultural dynamics and multidisciplinary approaches
  2. Analysis Report
    • Write an 8-page analysis report including:
      • Introduction and purpose statement
      • Context and population of the global issue
      • Impact, implications, and approaches to address the issue
      • Reflection on the field study’s significance and ramifications for other regions.
    • Add images or links to illustrate examples.
  3. Panel Discussion or Visual Art
    • Create a 3-minute video presentation or a 3-slide collage summarizing your report and reflection.
    • Include a discussion question derived from your field research and analysis.
    • Post the video or visual art on the Panel Discussion board for peer engagement.
  4. Restrictions on AI Use
    • Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) are strongly discouraged.
    • Submit evidence of Writing Center consultations to support your process.

Grading Criteria

  • Depth and relevance of analysis (40%)
  • Quality and clarity of the written report (30%)
  • Creativity and engagement in the presentation (20%)
  • Adherence to guidelines limiting AI use (10%)
