Analyzing Computational Solutions with AI Support

Example developed based on CLOs from: CS 161 – Introduction to Computer Science.

Purpose

This assignment helps students critically analyze computational solutions related to social and structural inequities.

Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze computational solutions addressing social and structural inequities.
  • Evaluate the limitations of solutions using multidisciplinary perspectives.
  • Reflect on ethical considerations in computational problem-solving.

Instructions

Format (Final Deliverable)

  1. Data Analysis and Computational Solutions
    • Select a dataset related to a social or structural inequity (e.g., gender disparities in STEM fields or racial disparities in education).
    • Use Microsoft Copilot or ChatGPT to analyze the dataset.
      • Examples of analysis tasks: Identify patterns, correlations, or anomalies.
      • Ask questions like: “What trends are evident in this dataset regarding racial disparities in education?”
    • Evaluate the computational solutions derived from the dataset:
      • Assess the effectiveness of the solution in addressing inequities.
      • Discuss its limitations and potential unintended consequences.
  2. Presentation
    • Create a 5-minute video or a 5-slide presentation summarizing:
      • The dataset and computational solution.
      • Key findings and insights.
      • Ethical considerations and limitations.
  3. Reflection
    • Write a 300-word reflection addressing:
      • How AI tools supported your analysis.
      • The role of computational solutions in addressing inequities.
      • The ethical responsibilities of computer scientists in solving societal problems.

Grading Criteria

  • Depth and accuracy of data analysis (40%)
  • Effectiveness and clarity of presentation (30%)
  • Ethical evaluation of computational solutions (20%)
  • Reflection on AI use and ethical considerations (10%)
